Joseph A. Russo, M.D.
Board-certified and Harvard-trained Plastic Surgeon Dr. Joseph Russo has spent 25 years and counting in private practice outside Boston, always intrigued by the ever-growing ways to provide non-surgical options, which eventually became the aesthetic medicine we know today.
Dr. Russo facilitated improvements to the initial generations of lasers in the late 1990's and was one of the earliest adaptors to cosmetic neurotoxins and dermal fillers in the Northeast. Unlike other surgery practices, Dr. Russo expanded his to include nurse injectors, laser technicians, and delegated ancillary staff to use a myriad of lasers and rejuvenative offerings, creating a true cosmetic center. Just half way through his career, Dr. Russo realized he was a surgeon whose future would bring him far beyond the OR.
Around 2010, the medical aesthetics industry started to explode and consequently brought not only a new frontier for medical professionals but also a level of lawlessness.
People started practicing without proper credentials, training, or support, putting patients at risk and defaming the budding trade. Dr. Russo knew there had to be a better way to pioneer this boom. He had the knowledge and loved seeing the surfacing talent, especially among nurses, so he founded the Aesthetic Mentor (AM) in 2013 to train new injectors on the art of using cosmetic neurotoxin and dermal fillers in safe and clinically sound ways.
Dr. Russo found training these medical professionals was not enough. He felt that if he was going to teach them, it was his obligation to make sure they were practicing safely and legally. He dedicated himself to building a compliant practice of NP's, PA's, and RN's by simultaneously collecting a team of masterminds to cultivate the cause.
Technology and telemedicine would become the keys to this success. After collaborating with another visionary plastic surgeon who had developed the first cloud-based EMR system specifically for the cosmetic industry, Symplast, Dr. Russo launched Medical Aesthetics Associates (MAA) in 2017.
With MAA, medical aesthetic professionals in Massachusetts could now practice with compliance and malpractice assurances like never before, getting clinical orders from authorized prescribers in real time, maintaining a direct connection to the physician, and being held to high personal and industry standards thanks to innovation and collaboration.
Dr. Russo is both humbled and proud to guide others toward their aspirations in medical aesthetics, and he is honored to be creating a legacy that will make this industry better for future generations.
